Bruno Fernandes believes that Ruben Amorim has the capability to restore Manchester United to their former status as title winners.
Amorim is the sixth permanent manager for Man Utd since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013, stepping in after the dismissal of Erik ten Hag and a brief interim period under Ruud van Nistelrooy.
While the Red Devils have enjoyed some cup success, they have not added to their tally of 20 English league titles since Ferguson's departure, as clubs like Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool, and even Leicester City have celebrated triumphs.
In fact, United has only finished in the top two of the league in two out of the last 11 seasons.
While a title challenge isn't anticipated immediately under Amorim, his long-term goal will be to restore United to the top of English football.
The 39-year-old comes with a strong track record, having led Sporting CP to two Portuguese titles within four years, ending a title drought that had lasted since 2002. Currently, the Lions are in a great position to secure their 21st title, sitting at the top of the Liga Portugal table, six points ahead of Porto, and remaining unbeaten after 11 matches.
Former Sporting playmaker Fernandes is optimistic that his fellow countryman can achieve similar success at Old Trafford.
“I hope he can do the same here because sometimes a person can truly change the energy in a space if it’s the right moment,” Fernandes stated (via Man Utd’s official website).
“We’re hopeful that this is the right time for him to come and inject his energy and expertise into the team, given his remarkable achievements at Sporting.
“If anyone questions that, they just need to look at the history.
“Sporting went nearly 20 years without winning the league, and he brought them back to glory, claiming the title twice in four years with a very young team during a transformative period.
“So hopefully he can replicate that success for us here, and we can all enjoy a prosperous time together.”
