‘I had writer’s block for six months’ – Ayra Starr

Ayra Starr, the Grammy-nominated Nigerian singer-songwriter, recently shared her experience grappling with writer’s block and its impact on her creativity.

According to the artist, she faced a creative drought for about six months until a friend gifted her the demo of her song ’21’ on her birthday, which served as a turning point.

Reflecting on this pivotal moment in a widely circulated podcast interview, Ayra Starr revealed, “On my 21st birthday, a friend surprised me with the demo of ’21.’ I had confided in him about my struggles with writer’s block. Receiving that demo was a breakthrough for me. Recording ’21’ was an effortless process; I completed it in a single take, even while lying down with the microphone in hand."

She emphasized the significance of ’21’ in her creative journey, stating, “’21’ holds a special place in my heart as it opened up new perspectives for the entire album. It allowed me to reconnect with myself and envision my artistic identity in the way I had always envisioned.”
