Nigerians pit me against other female artists – Tiwa Savage

Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage has expressed frustration over being constantly compared to other female artists by enthusiastic fans. She explained that fans often claim new female artists are aiming to take her "throne."

In an interview with BET, the ‘Water & Garri’ artist shared that instead of seeing music as a competition, she makes an effort to befriend emerging female artists. Savage stated, "Fans always try to pit me against other female artists. Any new female artist that comes up, they say, ‘She is coming to take her throne.’"

She added, "I go out of my way to make friends with these new female artists because it’s not a competition. The real competition is with the male artists. I was thrilled when Tyla, a female artist, won the inaugural Best African Music Performance category at the Grammys over male nominees."
