The Federal High Court in Lagos has issued a six-month imprisonment sentence to the contentious cross-dresser and social media personality Idris Okuneye, famously referred to as Bobrisky.
Justice Abimbola Awogboro pronounced the six-month imprisonment, ruling out the possibility of a fine.
Bobrisky, who has stirred controversy, has remained in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) since being apprehended last week.
He was apprehended by the EFCC on charges related to the misuse of the local currency.
Bobrisky had previously pleaded guilty on April 5 to four counts of Naira misuse filed against him by the anti-graft agency.
In delivering the verdict on Friday, Justice Awogboro emphasized that "the act of defacing the Naira notes has become a serious issue, tarnishing the country's reputation."
"There needs to be an end to the practice of damaging and tampering with our currency. This verdict will serve as a warning to others," the judge added.
Subsequently, Justice Awogboro sentenced Bobrisky to six months imprisonment, with no option for a fine.
The commencement of the prison term will be from the date of his detention.
